The computer programs for wire drawing

There is a group of Pereng programs for computerized calculation of drafting, drawing force, temperature and power. It has been enlarged with a new variant - PerengR. In this version the need of power, force and torque is compared with the ability of the drawing machine, with its actual configuration, to meet this demand for the planned drawing. Per Enghag and Lars Rabe have prepared the new program type.

Machine data, installed power, nominal rpm, capstan diameters, efficiency and transmission are typed in, as is actual drafting. The program compares the performance of the drawing machine with what is needed for drawing of the actual wire rod with its tensile and deformation hardening. In a special table warnings are issued if the drawing is not possible to carry through with reference to force, power or torque. The temperature increase in each draft is calculated (estimated).

The program is a powerful tool for analysis of the complete park of drawing machines in the company. The result can be the base for steps to increase quality and reduce energy consumption.

For comparison between different alternatives at the formulation of a specification of requirements for a new machine installation the program calculations can be very helpful.
The version mainly deals with dry drawing but special tables and diagrams also open possibilities to make calculations for drafting of wet drawing machines with constant reduction. Also 1-3 dry drafts with variable reduction – before the wet drawing – can be calculated by the program. Two separate PerengR programs, one for carbon steel, one for austenitic stainless steel, are available.

The programs thus are delivered on a CD disk. The disk also contains general program information and many exercises for introduction and training.
A demo CD is delivered free of charge. The program application however presupposes that the user has installed Microsoft Excel in his own computer. Excel is a part of Microsoft Office.

My Book Steel Wire Technology

In steel wire technology there is a gap, both in eduacation and research, between specific drawing theory and all the different applications, with there practice and principles. The two areas, both absolutely necessary are treated.

This book is intended to be a “bridge over the gap between theory and practice”. I know that many technicians, active within the wire manufacturing industry, need information from the chapter Wire drawing theory as well as from the principal sections in every other chapter. On the other hand, people who have a deep knowledge of wire drawing theory, deeper than is given in this book, need practical hints on different sectors of the diversified steel wire technology currently used.
